Welcome to American History!
Welcome!
My name is Patrick Givens and I am a History Instructor here at Manor
College. I have been teaching for the last five years at Manor in
various different areas of American History. I attended Bucks County
Community College and Temple University where I earned my BA in History
with a minor in Political Science. I currently attend Norwich
University where I am completing my Master’s degree in Diplomacy and
International Conflict.
Many people have asked my “Why
History?” and “History? That is so boring!” I will answer the first
question this way, which is exactly why I love this job. I get to put
that question to the test every day. History is important to us
each and every day. It guides us in the law, in government and our
world. I embrace it and teach it in the hopes that those memories
remind us of the mistakes that have been made and the best way to avoid
them again in the future. The second question could pertain to any
discipline that is taught but think of it these terms, is it fun?
History is not all dates and “boring dead people”. It is alive and
around us constantly and every new discovery brings it to life. Ancient
dinosaur bones open new understanding to the past, well so does a lost
document or writings of a famous person and many not so famous people
as well. The search for answers is the fun and that is why it is
history and exactly why it is not boring!!
My goal
in teaching is to allow my students to open their eyes to the world
through history. I will not tell you how to think or how you are
supposed to feel about a subject, event, person or political issues. I
will not demean a student because he/she feels differently about a
subject than I do, nor will I force my opinions upon my students. This
is a learning environment that encourages all points of views and
accepts them as your own. It is my hope to stir debate and
discussion so that all may benefit.
