COURSE NAME: BA 220 Health Care Management - 1 Credit Hour

 

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This objective of the externship is to enhance the student’s college experience by observing and acquiring practical work experience in a health care services organization.  The student will engage in a minimum 80-hour externship in a health care area.  The student is responsible for placement, research, interviewing and transportation to and from the work site.  Students applying for this externship must be matriculated as a Health Care Management degree candidate and must have completed a minimum of 30 credits.  The student must have approval from the Program Director.

 

PHILOSOPHY OF THE COURSE:

The 80-hour externship will provide an opportunity for the student to integrate their knowledge and skills and make practical application in the work environment.  The experience will expose the student to various situations thus extending the learning experience.

 

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

A student completing this course will be able to:

 

*** Understand the requirements needed for an effective job search.

 

*** Demonstrate acceptable attributes and work attitudes in the workplace.

 

*** Demonstrate effective knowledge and skills required to perform effectively in a health care             organization.

 

STUDENT OUTCOMES:

1.  The student will demonstrate the ability to prepare a well written, error free cover letter and resume.

 

MEASURE:

An effective resume and cover letter.  This will encourage grammar, punctuation and written communication skills.

 

STANDARD:

80% of the students involved in an externship will achieve a grade of “B” or better. (80%).

 

2.  The student will demonstrate the ability to apply academic knowledge, skills, and abilities to an externship site in a health care services organization.

 

MEASURE:

The externship rating sheet will be completed.


STANDARD:

80% of the students will receive a rating of “Very good” or “outstanding”.

 

APPROACHES TO TEACHING:

1.  Discussions with the students regarding the climate and atmosphere of the externship location.

 

2.  Written and oral communication between the instructor and the externship supervisor/

manage.

ATTENDANCE/REQUIREMENTS

Attendance at every scheduled externship is expected.  A complete 80-hour externship is required.  A mutually agreed upon schedule to complete 80 hours will be determined by the employer and the student.  If the student is absent from the scheduled externship time for an extended period of time, the instructor must be notified immediately.

 

Once the externship is approved, the student must give the instructor an index card with the following information: the student’s name, address, and telephone number; the name, address, and telephone of the work site.  The name of the supervisor/manager under whom the student is working will also be submitted.  Obtain the correct spelling and title of the management personnel.

 

The student will keep a journal of the work experience.  This is to be done daily and given to the instructor at the completion of the externship.  The journals will be retained by the instructor.

Assignments are to be turned in on the scheduled due date---”NO EXCEPTIONS”.  A late assignment will result in a reduction of the project grade.  Emergencies, serious problems, etc. may be negotiated with the instructor.

Reference materials and textbooks used in business courses to

create a resume & overall skills for a successful externship.

ACADEMIC INTEGRITY:

I expect my student to uphold the principles of truth and honesty in the performance of all academic work.

 

Plagiarism (in any form), handing in work prepared or other courses and cheating on examinations and outside assignments is prohibited and will not be tolerated.

 

The first violation will be a grade of “F” for the assignment or examination with no repeat options.  Any subsequent violations will result in a grade of “F” for the course and possible dismissal from the college.

 

FORMAT OF THE JOURNAL:

 

The journal must be typed and include the following:

 

Page 1: Student information (name, course name/number, semester taken)

 

  Externship information (company name, address, telephone number, name and title

  of supervisor/manager.

 

Page 2: A listing of the days and number of hours worked each day and a total of hours worked.

 

Succeeding pages: Each day must have a separate entry.  Summarize the duties performed each                               day.  Describe your tasks in detail the first time it is performed.  You may                         include more than one entry per page.  Proofread your journal.  It must not                         have any errors in grammar, punctuation, and spelling.

 

FINAL NOTE: The student is encouraged to meet with the instructor to discuss any problems related to the successful completion of this course.  If there is any problems at the externship site the instructor should be contacted immediately.
