Course Description:

This is a part-time participation in the business world offering students an opportunity to acquire practical experience and to test academic concepts.   The student will engage in a minimum 80-hour externship.  The student is responsible for placement research, interviewing and transportation to and from the work site.  Students applying for this externship must be matriculated as an Accounting degree candidate and must have completed AC 101 Accounting I, AC 102 Accounting II, and AC 201 Intermediate Accounting and must have maintained at least a “C” in all accounting courses, and have a 2.0 semester and cumulative averages.

 

Course Philosophy:

The 80-hour externship will provide an opportunity for the student to integrate their knowledge and skills and make practical application in the work environment.  The experience will expose the student to various situations thus extending the learning experience.

 

Course Objectives:

A student completing this course will be able to:

1. Understand the requirements needed for an effective job search.

2. Demonstrate acceptable attributes and work attitudes in the job.

3. Demonstrate effective knowledge and skills required to perform effectively in an accounting/business organization.

 

Student Outcomes:

1.  The student will demonstrate the ability to prepare a well written, error free resume and cover letter.  This will be used in responding to an advertisement for an accounting position. 

Measure:

This will be measured with an effective resume and cover letter.  It will

encourage grammar, punctuation and written communication skills.

 

Standard:

80% of the students will be able to locate a position, prepare a resume and respond to an advertisement for an accounting position.

 

2. The student will demonstrate the ability to apply academic knowledge, skills, and abilities to an externship site in an accounting organization.

 

Measure:

 The employer will complete the externship performance-rating sheet.

 

Standard:

80% of the students will receive a “4 out of  5” on the performance rating scale as determined by the employer. 

 

Approaches to Teaching:

1. Discussions with the students regarding the climate and atmosphere of the externship location and the externship responsibilities and requirements.

 

2. Written and oral communication between the instructor and the externship supervisor/manager.

Attendance:

Once the externship schedule has been approved, attendance is expected.  A complete 80-hour externship is required.  The completion date of the externship is based upon the closure of the semester.  A mutually agreed upon schedule to complete the 80 required hours will be determined by the employer and the student.  If the student is absent from the scheduled externship site for an extended period of time, the instructor must be notified immediately.

 

The student is encouraged to meet with the instructor to discuss the progress of the externship.  A meeting should be arranged in the event that there may be problems at the externship that may hinder the successful completion of this course.  If serious problems should arise at the externship site, the instructor should be contacted immediately.

 

Requirements:

The student will interview for a prospective position.  Once a position has been selected by the student and approved by the program director, information pertinent to the position must be submitted to the instructor.

The Required Journal Experience:

 

The student will keep a journal of the work experience that will encompass the duties, responsibilities, and accountabilities of the externship. The journals will be retained by the instructor once submitted.  This assignment is expected to be submitted at the conclusion of the externship.  A late assignment will result in a reduction of the project grade.  Emergencies, serious problems and special situations may be negotiated with the instructor.   

Format of the Journal:

 

The journal must be prepared in typewritten format and include the following information:

1.     Student information (name, course name and number, semester taken)

 

2. Externship information (company name, address, telephone number,

    name and title of supervisor/manager)

 

     3. A listing of days worked; hours each day; summary of hours

 

     4. Each externship day must have an individual entry.  Summarize the job     

          functions performed each day.  Describe your tasks “in detail” the first

          time it is performed.  Proofread your journal.  It must not contain any            errors in spelling, grammar, and punctuation.

 

     5. Your journal is as unique as you are.  Once you have fulfilled the                    requirements as outlined by this syllabus, you may personalize the  

          journal to enhance your experience.  You may include any additional

          information or enhancements  you may want to share with me for your 

          final grade.

         

Academic Integrity:

I expect my student to uphold the principles of truth and honesty in the performance of all academic work. Plagiarism (in any form), handing in work prepared for other courses and cheating on examinations and outside assignments is prohibited and will not be tolerated.  The first violation will be a grade of “F” for the assignment or examination with no repeat options.  Any subsequent violations will result in a grade of “F” for the course and possible dismissal from the college.
