UKRAINIAN CULTURAL WORKSHOPS
ABOUT THE UKRAINIAN HERITAGE STUDIES CENTER
For twenty-five years, the on-campus Ukrainian Heritage Studies Center (UHSC) at Manor College has provided education and information about Ukrainian culture and folk art. Since its establishment in 1977, the Ukrainian values, culture and traditions, have been stimulating the growth of Ukrainian community life in the United States and fostering an ethnic consciousness among Ukrainian Americans through educational and cultural programs.
The UHSC museum collection contains Ukrainian folk art and unique examples of authentic traditional dress from various regions of Ukraine. There are a number of master craftsmen who work with the center through exhibits and demonstrations of their particular skills in leather-craft, beadwork, weaving, pottery, embroidery, pysanky making, ritual breads, ceramics and wood carving. These master craftsman conduct workshops in their crafts, assist in the preparation of educational research materials, participate in numerous educational outreach exhibits and are involved with various publications that bring their talents to others.
In addition to a folk art collection, the UHSC maintains an extensive library of Ukrainian archives that are used for research in both English and Ukrainian languages. The UHSC Ukrainian Library houses a collection of many rare artifacts along with a collection of over 5,000 volumes of Ukrainian books. Students, parents and professionals often use this extensive library for their research projects. A video loan library is also available for teachers and organizations.
The UHSC regularly hosts workshops, seminars, symposiums, community and educational programs, college courses, and tours for children and adults to learn more about Ukraine. For more information call (215) 885-2360, ext. 293 or visit us on the web at www.manor.edu. To register, call (215) 884-2218.
