Take courses independently or enroll in the Civil War Certificate program. To earn a certificate, you must take eight courses. Four must be core courses with the remainder being electives. For an application and/or to register, contact the Continuing Education Department at (215) 884-2218.

*The Gettysburg Campaign – 1.2 CEUs 12 hours – Act 48 approved
Two mighty armies engaged by chance in the greatest single battle ever fought in the Western Hemisphere. A detailed examination of events leading up to the battle and each day’s activity will be covered. Did the mighty Army of the Potomac finally get the leadership it deserved? Did Robert E. Lee blunder in his strategy? Did his commanders let him down? Would he have prevailed if Jackson were alive?

**Civil War Weapons and Tactics – .6 CEUs 6 hrs – Act 48 approved
This course will examine the weapons of the Civil War, and how they were utilized in combat. The course will cover the weapons and tactics of infantry, cavalry, and artillery. Students will utilize historical scenarios and Civil War artifacts to gain a greater understanding of the weapons and their impact on the war.

**The Franklin-Nashville Campaign –.6 CEUs 6 hrs – Act 48 approved
An angry Confederate Gen. John Bell Hood, described by a contemporary as “more lion than fox,” sends his Army of Tennessee into seven futile charges that rival the famous one at Gettysburg against an entrenched Union army. Furious that his troops let Union soldiers escape at Spring Hill, Hood berates his generals and orders heroic assaults that eventually lead to the destruction of his generals at Franklin and his army at Nashville.

**Causes of the Civil War – .6 CEUs – 6 hrs  Act 48 approved
This course will help you to understand the factors that led up to America being at war with itself. In the first session, you will learn about the seeds of independence and slavery. The second session will cover topics about the “nullification crises” and the “manifest destiny.”  The final session will examine “popular sovereignty” and end with “the gathering storm.”

We’ve all heard of Lee, Grant, Sherman and Jackson, and their colorful careers and personalities are a fascinating study. But other Civil War generals with equally fascinating careers are virtually unknown today. In this course, you will meet them all.

The Civil War Series, developed by the Delaware Civil War Round Table, is an overview of the events that led to the war, major battles and the after-effects that still impact our nation today. The war will be examined year by year. This is a program for all ages conducted by a team of experts. It is one you will not want to miss.

Lost But Not Forgotten
Hear the story of an Abolishionist family told through family letters and documents, dating 1830 to 1880. The letters were found in the trash and recovered moments before the trash truck arrived. It’s a wonderful story of a historical family that will not be forgotten.
