Philosophy

The Residence Life Department embraces the philosophy of educating the total person, and the staff members within the Residence Hall are challenged to create an environment which is an educationally, culturally, spiritually and personally enriching experience for all residents.
Thus, the Resident Coordinator (RC) and the Resident Assistant (RA) positions are vital within the College, as they involve direct contact with the resident students. The Resident Assistant (RA), the cornerstone of the hall to which he or she has been assigned, is an interested and trained individual who is available for advise, support and encouragement.
Residence Life staff members strive to:

  • Bring out individual identities and strengths
  • Help students weather the inevitable changes in their values, ideas, maturity and intellectual achievement
  • Work together to organize various learning experiences for the residents

The Goal

The goal of the Dean of Students and her staff is to encourage all Manor College students to cultivate a responsible life style and community values inherent in the Catholic Basilian mission of REVERENCE ( to regard with esteem), RESPECT ( thoughtful consideration of others and treating others with care), and SERVICE ( contribution of one’s time and talents to help another), while concentrating on the specific awareness of the “ETHNIC DIVERSITY” (traditions, customs, and culture) of the Manor College Community.

Message from the Resident Coordinator Carol King

“Philosophy: life is a classroom. We are both student and teacher, each day is a test, and each day we receive a passing or failing grade in one particular subject: grace is compassion, gratitude surrender, faith, forgiveness, good manners, reverence, and the list goes on. It’s something money can’t buy and credentials rarely produced. Being the smartest, the prettiest, the most talented, the richest, or even the poorest, can’t help, being a humble person can and being a helpful person can guide you through your days with grace and gratitude.”  Taken from Amazing grace/philosophy
Passion and purpose are two of my favorite words. I am passionate about encouraging students to live well and grow and to discover their God given purpose.  I now add a third word grace- so aptly expressed. One of the greatest responsibilities I have is in helping you grow and learn while enjoying your living experience here in the Residence Hall. Along with the staff, the Resident Assistants, who are students living here in the Residence Hall, ways are found to counsel, support and guide students – helping them find balance.

Academics: To be a successful student you must know how to study and manage your time. You must complete homework, projects, and other assignments. Though no one but your alarm clock and maybe your roommate are here to make sure you get up and go to class, this is your primary responsibility and purpose for being in college. You’ve got to go in order to know! There are many learning support systems that are available to you if you are struggling and need a lot or a little help. Just ask!

Social life: College is a growing experience when it comes to social development. You are living in an environment with people who are different than you in many ways. By adhering to the Judeo- Christian values of respecting oneself and others as set forth in the mission of Manor College, community is being built. All students are invited to participate in programs and activities held in the Residence Hall and on campus. Building friendships, communicating, sharing ideas, listening, and being open to differences are very important parts of your social experience.
The Student Life department offers a variety of activities all year long. Students are given a calendar to inform them of what is going on every month. Staff Faculty and Student games, bake sales, bowling, miniature golf, holiday parties, community service projects…just to name a few!
Cheer them on! Manor College has champion soccer and basketball teams. You are invited to all of the games.

Spiritual Life: You are God’s unique creation, made with a definite purpose. There are ways for you to discover that purpose and to be a well rounded individual. Students living here are given many opportunities to serve others, to volunteer within the community as well as on the Manor Campus. Campus Ministry plays a vital role in this discovery. They sponsor coffee houses, music ministry each week in room 309 and refreshing retreats. Students are welcome to go into the Student Lounge on the first floor every day from 7:00AM to 7:30 AM for morning meditations. During this time you can read materials supplied by Campus Ministry and quietly reflect and pray.

You Can Have A Great Experience Living Here…

But it really is up to you. Attitude is everything. A quote from best selling author and noted speaker Charles Swindoll says,” The most significant decision I can make on a day to day basis is my choice of attitude. It is more important than my bankroll, my successes or failures, fame or pain, what other people think of me or say about me, my circumstances, or my position. When my attitudes are right there is no barrier too high, no valley too deep, no dream too extreme, and no challenge too great.”
Students living in the Residence Hall must read and refer to the Student Handbook and Addendum.  As a student living in the Residence Hall you will be expected and required to abide by the rules set forth for you to have an enjoyable, life changing experience as a resident here.

Remember…What you experience here will be a part of your life forever.
