Early Childhood EducationBoth Early Childhood and Elementary Education fields are currently experiencing rapid change and tremendous growth in job opportunities. 

In the field of Early Childhood, “Wage and salary jobs in the child day care services industry are projected to grow about 34 percent over the 2006-16 period, compared with the 11 percent employment growth projected for all industries combined” (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, http://www.bls.gov/oco/cg/cgs032.htm#outlook).

In the field of Elementary Education, “Job opportunities for school teachers over the next 10 years will vary from good to excellent... Most job openings will result from the need to replace the large number of teachers who are expected to retire over the 2006-16 period,” (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos069.htm#outlook).

The Early Childhood and Middle Level Majors at Manor College strive to develop the following in students:

  • efficient and effective oral and written communication skills
  • ability to set and develop skills and standards for children’s behavior
  • understanding of and adherence to professional ethics and values
  • skills and tools to become information literate in a variety of formats and media

In addition, students are provided with a broad range of opportunities to further explore the Judeo-Christian Basilian values of peace, justice and concern for others through courses in Philosophy and Religious Studies.  Students also develop skills and knowledge in subject areas including English, History, Science, Mathematics, Psychology and Computer Science as part of the course of study.

Manor’s Early Childhood Program allows students to earn an A.A. in Early Childhood Education with a focus on children aged birth-9 years, qualifying the student for the following positions in the field:

  • Child Care Centers:
    • Director of a child care center with A.A. in Early Childhood and three years experience
    • Group Supervisor of a child care center with an AA in Early Childhood and two years experience
  • Group Child Care Center
    • Primary staff person with A.A. in Early Childhood and proper facility licensure
  • Family Child Care Centers
    • Owner/Operator with A.A in Early Childhood and proper facility licensure
  • Home Visitor:
    • Primary staff person as part of Head Start or Early Head Start program, providing services to children in the home

    * Additionally, this major serves students who wish to transfer to a four-year program, with the goal of teaching in Elementary school from Kindergarten through 4th grade
    *Students possessing a current Child development Associate credential (CDA) are provided 6 transfer credits for ED 102—Introduction to Early Childhood Education and ED 119—Observation and Field Experience

Manor’s Middle Level Program allows students to complete an A.A degree with a broad-based liberal arts education while also gaining theoretical and practical experience with middle level-aged children from 4th through 8th grade. Students in this program expect to transfer to another institution to earn a four-year degree in Middle Level Education with a concentration in one or more areas, such as Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, and/or Literacy.  A four-year degree in this field will qualify students for the following positions in the field:
