COURSE(S)

1a. To provide students with a core liberal arts and science education

Allied Health Transfer students will be able to apply the scientific method to the study of natural systems.

2005-2006-76%

2006-2007- 69%

BI 101: Upon completion of the lecture section of the course, students will have established a comprehensive understanding of the cell as the fundamental unit of all life

BI 203:  Upon completion of the lecture section of the course, students will be able to apply the scientific method to the understanding of the cause, prevention, control and treatment of disease causing microorganisms

BI 202:  Upon completion of the lecture section of the course, students will have established an understanding of the interaction of physiological processes among all body systems.

BI 101: Students will be assessed by a series of questions contained in a comprehensive final exam.

BI 203:  Students will be evaluated by 8 microbiology case studies given at the end of the semester.

BI 202:  Students are evaluated by a comprehensive essay contained in the final examination

1c.To develop in students the reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills that will enable them to communicate effectively

Allied Health Transfer students will be able to articulate scientific and mathematical concepts in precise language.

2005-2006- 76%

2006-2007- 82%

CH 101:  Students completing this course should be able to demonstrate her/his ability to explain chemical concepts in concise and precise language.

MH203:  The student will be able to evaluate the statistics of a research project or survey and write a written report of their evaluation using mathematically correct, concise and precise language.

CH 101: Each student will make a table or a series of tables that report results obtained from an experiment that involves the reaction of different metals with different acids.

MH 203: Using the internet, each student will locate a recent research project or survey and the findings of the project or survey.  He/she will write a paper identifying the target population, the type of sampling used and the effects the method of sampling employed may have had on the results of the survey.   He/She will indicate which statistical measures were used to analyze the data and the type of graphs, if any, that were used to represent data.  Based on the criteria for a good study, the student will determine if the chosen study meets the criteria and summarize his/her opinion of the validity of the project and the results.  Included in this paper will be appropriate bibliographic information.

2a. To provide students with

the theory and knowledge specific to their chosen

careers

Allied Health Transfer students will meet requirements necessary to transfer to another institution

2005-2006-87%

2006-2007-81%

Graduates are determined to meet requirements necessary to transfer if they have received an acceptance letter from an appropriate institution

The percentage of Allied Health graduates who receive an acceptance letter from an appropriate institution will be assessed.

MH 203:  Students will demonstrate an understanding of the ethical implications of falsifying data or misrepresenting data in scientific studies, research reports and data collection

BI 203:  During the first exam, students will write a reaction paper on a selected article regarding the dangerous and often fatal practice of medical personnel failing to properly wash hands to protect patients from infectious diseases.

MH 203:  Given a real life situation in which the practice of falsifying or misrepresenting data was uncovered, students will write a reaction paper in which they include the motivation for such practices, the impact on the results and conclusions, and the ethical issues such practices raise.

To provide students with Information Literacy: the knowledge, skills, and tools to obtain information in many formats and media in order to identify, retrieve, and apply relevant and valid knowledge and information resources to their study or research.

(Applies to Goal 1b.)

Allied Health Transfer students will be able to access, evaluate and apply information to scientific studies.

2005-2006- 96%

2006-2007- 93%
