Expanded Functions Dental Assistant (EFDA)

Expanded Functions Dental Assistants (EFDAs) are part of a team of dental professionals who perform reversible dental procedures as set by the guidelines of the Pennsylvania State Board of Dentistry, under the direct supervision of a dentist. EFDA duties include direct patient care in taking x-rays; performing laboratory procedures; fabricating temporary crowns and bridges; placing, carving and finishing of amalgam (silver) and composite (bonding) restorations (fillings); cosmetic dentistry, orthodontic procedures and other functions considered to be primary patient care. All students are required to obtain CPR and X-Ray certification before their second year.

The demand for Para dental professionals has grown tremendously over the last ten years. EFDAs have brought about a means by which dentists can meet the needs of their patients and still offer quality care in a professional and timely manner. With managed health care firmly in place, the number of corporate dental groups will increase sharply, along with the need for qualified EFDAs.
